1. Brief Introduction


The discipline “Instrument Science and Technology” associated with the School of Instrument Science and Engineering of Southeast University was established in 1960, which is one of the traditional and top-ranked disciplines in Southeast University. Our school has offered doctor/master programs since 1961. In 1981 and 1984, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to establish two master’s degree granting rights: “Precision Instrument and Machinery” and “Testing Measurement Technology and Instrument”. In 1990, it was approved to set up the doctoral degree in “Precision Instrument and Machinery”. In May 1992, in order to meet the needs of the development of the discipline, the department of Instrument Science and Engineering was established from the department of Automatic Control, and the School of Instrument Science and Engineering was established in September 2006.


The School owns the Key Laboratory for  “Micro-inertial Instrument and advanced navigation technology” of the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory for “Remote Measurement and Control Technology ” of Jiangsu Province, the Key Laboratory  of “Land Field Investigation and Monitoring Technology” of Ministry of Land and Resources, “Agricultural Internet of Things Perception and System Control” Jiangsu Provincial Engineering laboratory; It has participated in the construction of  “National Key Laboratory of Bioelectronics”, “National Engineering Research Center for Thermal Power Unit Vibration”, and “Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Smart Construction and Operation and Maintenance”.


The second-class discipline of precision instrument and machinery was selected as the first batch of key disciplines in Jiangsu Province in 1994, and selected as “National Key Cultivation Discipline” in Jiangsu Province in 2005; In March 2017, the two disciplines of “Information Sensing and System Technology” and “Navigation Guidance and Control” of the School of Instrument Science and Engineering were selected into the National Defense Science and Technology Bureau of National Defense Specialties. The discipline of Instrument Science and Technology has been selected as the first-class key discipline in Jiangsu Province and the dominant disciplines in Jiangsu Province. At present, it’s also the key disciplines for the “Double Tops” construction in Southeast University.


The academic level, scientific research achievements and personal training of this discipline are at the forefront of similar disciplines in China. In the 2016 “Instrument Science and Technology” first-class discipline evaluation organized by the Ministry of Education, the discipline of “Instrument Science and Technology” of our School was selected into the “A-” discipline, ranking the fourth in China. In December 2015, the “Instrument Science and Technology” discipline of our School was rated as excellent out of 153 participating disciplines in Jiangsu Province in the acceptance evaluation of the first-class key discipline of the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” of Jiangsu Province (the total acceptance of 9 disciplines in the province was “excellent”). 



2. Organization structure



The School consists of an organ, a teaching and experimental center and six research institutes. The Measurement and Control Technology Teaching Experimental Research Center, the Advanced Navigation Technology Research Institute, the Micro Inertial System and Devices Research Institute, the Information Navigation, and Intelligent Measurement and Control Institute, and the Robot Sensing and Control Institute of Technology, Institute of Spatial Information and Navigation and Positioning, Institute of Automotive Safety Technology and Virtual Reality.


3. Academic team



The School adheres to the discipline construction as the leader, the team building as the core, and the base construction as the guarantee. Through careful planning and hard work. At present, a team of high-level teachers has been formed, including the the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the National “Millions of Plan” experts, and a group of outstanding young and middle-aged academic leaders at the national, provincial and ministerial levels. The School has 77 faculty members, including 68 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 23 professors (including 26 doctoral supervisors) and 29 associate professors. Teachers with doctoral degrees at home and abroad account for 95% of full-time teachers. Among the teachers, there are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 gainer of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 technology leader of national “Ten Thousand Programme”, 1 outstanding teacher of national “Ten Thousand Programme”, 1 national project candidate of  “million talents in the new century”, 2 new century talents from the Ministry of Education, 1 special professor in Jiangsu Province, 3 young and middle-aged science and technology leaders in the “333” project in Jiangsu Province, 4 young and middle-aged academic leaders, and 3 academic leaders of “Blue Project in Jiangsu Province”, 12 six peak talents in Jiangsu Province. Among them, the research team of “Robot Sensing and Control Technology” was selected as the “Qinglan Engineering” technology innovation team in Jiangsu Province.


4. Scientific research



This discipline is oriented to the main battlefield of national defense construction and economic construction, aiming at solving important theoretical problems and key technologies in national defense construction and economic construction in China. The School has strong scientific research capabilities. In the past five years, it has undertaken national key research and development projects, the key projects and surface projects of national natural science fund project, national 863 key projects, national science and technology support projects, national defense key model projects, national defense pre-research projects, and national defense innovation special zone project, 921 manned space engineering project, provincial projects, etc. And there are more than 90 horizontal cooperation projects.


This discipline has significant scientific research features and has made important contributions to the development of China's ship navigation technology, silicon micro-inertial instrument technology, ocean and space exploration technology, satellite positioning and land measurement technology, telemechanical robot technology, and rehabilitation and disabled robot technology. We have successfully developed ship flexible gyro, maglev gyroscope, silicon micro accelerometer and shipboard strap-down inertial navigation system, and is equipped on various advanced warships and aircraft carriers of the Chinese navy; The high-precision positioning problem of satellites under the conditions of tunnels and mountains were overcome, and the land and resources investigation and monitoring system based on GPS/PDA technology was successfully developed, which solved the problem of real-time high-precision monitoring of land in China. It has been popularized and applied in land management departments of 13 provinces and cities nationwide, providing strong technical support for governments at all levels to realize fine and real-time management of land and resources. Aiming at the urgent need of nuclear anti-terrorism in China, it has broken through the difficult problem of real-time remote operation control of mobile robots in a large-scale complex environment, and successfully developed a highly mobile small-scale nuclear detection teleoperation robot, which broke the monopoly and blockade of foreign technology, And equipped with China's chemical defense force, Qinshan nuclear power plant, nuclear reactor project, etc. It has also undertaken the security tasks of major events such as 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the 2013 Asian Youth The conference, and the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games. It has achieved significant social and military application value, and has been widely reported by CCTV news, military channel, science, and technology channel and the overseas edition of People's Daily. The astronaut's on-orbit operation force measurement the system was installed in the space laboratory of Tiangong No. 2 in China, and was launched into space on September 2016, playing an important role in the orbit. Aiming at helping assistive public welfare undertakings, after the past ten years of research and development, we have developed a variety of tactile perception myoelectric control intelligent prosthetics and remote limb rehabilitation training robots, which have achieved industrialization in Danyang Prosthetics Co., Ltd. and Qianjing Rehabilitation Equipment Co., Ltd. Furthermore, it has obtained remarkable social and economic benefits. 



In the past five years, the scientific research achievements of this discipline have won 1 second prize of national the technological invention, 1 second prize of national scientific and technological progress, 6 first prize, 6 second prize and 3 third prize of provincial and ministerial scientific and technological progress; 2 Geneva International Invention Gold Awards, 2 Silver Awards, etc.


5. Talent cultivation



Our undergraduate course of “Measurement and Control Technology and Instrumentation” is a national-level characteristic major and a brand major of Jiangsu Province. This major focuses on basic and strong practice, and is one of the first batch of Excellent Engineer Training Program approved by the ministry of education. The School recruits academic Ph.D. students and academic masters in the Instrument Science and Technology first-class disciplines, recruits engineering PhD students in the Electronic Information professional doctoral degree, and recruits professional master students in Machine Instrumentation Engineering professional master degree.


  

The teaching level and teaching quality of the teachers are good. The teaching team of “Sensor and Detection Technology” is a national-level teaching team. It is selected as one of the national teaching masters, and has won the special prize of Baosteel Excellent Teacher and one outstanding prize.


The School offers basic courses of general education, basic courses of electrical platform, major courses and direction courses, large-scale experimental courses and concentrated practice. It has the characteristics of standardization, serialization and content modernization. It not only lays a broad foundation theory for students, broadens the knowledge, but also reflects new ideas, new technologies and new methods in the discipline of instrument science and technology. The college attaches great importance to the cultivation of talents, continuously improves the quality of teaching, and actively carries out teaching reforms. In the past five years, it has undertaken 11 national and provincial teaching reform projects, established an innovative talent training mode of combining scientific research and teaching, integrating learning and research, and formed a multi-dimensional talent training feature of theoretical teaching, practical teaching, extracurricular research and online learning. Two state-level experimental teaching demonstration centers have been built: “Mechatronics Comprehensive Engineering Training Center”, “Mechatronics Integrated Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Center”. And an engineering practice education center of Jiangsu province Internet of things technology engineering training center and a center of experimental teaching and the practice education of Jiangsu province the two disciplines of measure and control technology and instrument comprehensive training center are constructed. In the past three years, 8 textbooks have been published, including 5 national planning textbooks. Sensor technology and detection technology were selected as national excellent courses in 2009 and 2010 respectively, and sensor technology was selected as national excellent resource sharing course in 2015. The school provides a good environment for students' extracurricular research activities by combining the characteristics of disciplines, and has remarkable characteristics in practice ability, innovation ability and cultivation of outstanding students. In the past five years, the undergraduate students of this discipline have won 8 first prizes in the international digital model competition, 3 first prizes of the international Robcup robot competition, and 2 second prizes of the first prize of the national college students' Challenge Cup extracurricular scientific and technological activity competition, 3 first prizes and 5 second prizes of national electronic design competitions, 6 special prizes, 4 first prizesfor national robot innovation competition. More than 30 percent of undergraduates have won prizes in various disciplines above the provincial level. The employment of students is wide-ranging. Over the years, graduates are in short supply and have been widely praised by employers. Many graduates have become well-known experts, scholars and senior managers in various fields, such as Dr. Shen Xiangyang, Vice President of Microsoft Corporation of the United States; Prof. Fang Jiancheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice President of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics; Professor Zhu Xiangyang from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Distinguished Professor of Changjiang Scholars, National Outstanding Youth Fund winners; Professor Liu Chengliang from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Distinguished Professor of Changjiang Scholars; Professor Li Jianqing, Chief Scientist of National Key Research and Development Program, Vice President of Nanjing Medical University; etc. Our school has made a number of important teaching achievements, winning the second prize of national teaching achievements in 2018 and 2009, the special prize of Jiangsu province in 2009, the first prize of jiangsu province in 2017 and 2004, and the second prize of Jiangsu province in 2011 and 2000, etc.


6. International communication



The school is actively engaged in international scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, the University of Maryland, the University of Victoria, the Swiss Nuclear Center, the Italian Polytechnic University, the University of Waseda, the Moscow University of Russia, the University of Wollongong, Australia and other well-known universities have established good relations of cooperation. It has participated in the research task of the international major cooperation project “Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-C” led by Professor Ding Yuzhong, and the research on “Galileo Satellite Navigation Technology”, a key international cooperation project between China and Europe. In the past five years, more than 60 teachers have been selected to go abroad for communication or cooperation. They also organized International Navigation Technology Conference, China-European Galileo Satellite Positioning System Seminar, IEEE International Measurement and Instrument Conference, China-Japan International Sensing Technology Seminar, World Intelligent Manufacturing Conference - Human-Machine Cooperation Branch, 2018 The 7th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology and other international academic conferences. 


Through the school, undergraduate students go to foreign universities for exchanges and joint training each year, such as the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, the French High School in Paris, the University of Michigan at Dilburg, and the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. About 15% of undergraduates go abroad to pursue graduate degrees each year. In addition, the school attaches great importance to the internationalization of students. Every year, famous scholars from universities in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan are invited to serve as visiting professors in our school, and conduct academic exchanges and lectures on a regular basis. In the daily teaching, a group of English-speaking courses taught by foreign teachers and teachers studying abroad, which has created good learning conditions for the internationalization of students.
